How can massage and bodywork help?

Generally, people use massage for either general relaxation and wellbeing, or to address a specific complaint, such as pain or limited range of motion. Research suggests massage therapy may contribute to both goals.
Some of the general benefits of massage therapy may include:

  • Physical relaxation
  • Improved circulation, which nourishes cells and improves waste elimination
  • Relief of muscular tension and other aches and pains
  • Release of nerve compression (carpel tunnel, sciatica)
  • Greater flexibility and range of motion
  • Enhanced energy and vitality
What conditions can be helped by receiving regular massage?
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Pain, including muscle tension, back, shoulder and neck pain
  • Repetitive stress injuries
How often should I get a massage?

How frequently you get a massage is totally up to you. Generally speaking, if you’re recovering from an injury, or trying to address a chronic issue, once a week for 4-6 weeks is the typical schedule. If you want to then, maintain your wellbeing, once or twice a month is recommended.

Does a massage have to hurt to be effective?

Absolutely not. If a therapist tells you this: run. It is possible for some discomfort to be felt when tissue is moved when it’s been stuck and unhappy for so long, but pain is not okay. Communication is key. The “no pain, no gain” attitude is what ends up hurting more than helping. I’ve spent my career finding smarter ways to free up soft tissues. You’ll feel better, and not have to suffer to get there.

When should I avoid massage therapy?

There are many general contraindications for massage, and some are okay with specialized type of work. The most obvious time to avoid a massage is when you’re sick. Allergies are ok, and sinus massage can be amazing for relieving seasonal sinus pressure/headaches. Holistic Wellness Massage is indicated for most people with few exceptions, but deep work should be avoided if you have diabetes, have taken pain medication, or have chronic lymphatic problems.
